ABOUT THE BARN QUEEN
"Barn Queen" (and "Barn King") are decidedly tongue-in-cheek names.
Barn King manages the facilities and farm upkeep with the help of two wonderful farm hands. Horses are fed and turned
in and out twice daily, stalls are mucked, manure is loaded and trucked off the property, fences are built, fences are repaired
and equipment is maintained. It's not exactly the work of royalty. I manage horse health care, which requires staying in
very close touch with boarders, veterinarians and farriers, play nursemaid to injured or aged horses, conduct "late night
check" and manage marketing for the farm. I also work as a writer specializing in veterinary medicine and, of course,
maintain this website.
Going back several years... Barn King and I met because I boarded my horse at his barn. For our first date, we picked
up a donkey and a goat to transport them to a Christmas pageant at a local church. It was a lot of fun and a lot of laughs.
Eventually, I left my orderly townhouse in a pristine neighborhood, where I'd lived for 18 years, to move to the farm.
Talk about culture shock! That was over a decade ago.
We have an unusual though comfortable home built over the stalls (yes, we actually live IN the barn), with windows enabling
us to view the horses when they're inside. This gives us the ability to closely watch over the well-being of each horse and
makes for some interesting observations.
We board over 40 horses, owned by over 30 owners. It's like a big, extended family with all the joys, hassles, drama
and, sometimes, sadness that any family experiences. Every day is an adventure.
Between the two of us, Barn King and I have spent over 80 years with horses. We have a lot of stories to tell and a lot
of experiences to share. We hope you enjoy our website and find it helpful.
